Symbolism of Eve
The Bible, our latest creation myth, offers us quite a controversial and somewhat contradictory version.
If you read carefully, you might think there was not just one Eve, but maybe two or three or even six. Nevertheless, seven seems to be the aimed number.
Unfortunately, on the 7th Day, the Almighty God, tired after all that hard work, rested for a bit.
Let’s now return to the famously infamous Eve of the sixth day, the wife of Adam.
Although she is made from Adam’s rib, she does not need the breath of life to become a living soul. As God never gifted her the breath of life, she either does not need it, making her an improved creation in comparison to Adam or she is not a living soul, which would make the whole story interesting, to say the least. She is able to see that the “Tree is good for food, and a delight to the eyes, understanding that the tree was to be desired to make one wise”.
Not much happens after she eats the fruit or after she offers it to Adam.
It is only after Adam himself eats the forbidden fruit that “the eyes of both of them were opened” and God gets frustrated and angry.
Curious…
True that God only addressed Adam directly, specifically instructing him not to eat. But the whole cast out, fall episode appears to be more as the reaction of a jealous man, than a concerned or loving father.
And then again, why the rib? What makes it so special, perhaps bone marrow?
What is that deep sleep? A dream, hypnosis, anesthesia, coma or death itself?
Are there more Eves?
Other than the biblical ones?
Aphrodite, created from the white foam of her father’s Uranus severed genitals. But Eve was not a goddess, one might say.
Pandora, the first human woman, created by Hephaestus on the instructions of Zeus, as a punishment to Prometheus stealing the fire and creating the first human man. Prometheus shaped man out of mud and Athena breathed life into his clay figure.
Putting everything into perspective, is it possible that Adam was in fact created by the two gods and Eve was created by a totally different god as an act of revenge, hence the two very different creation stories of humans in the Bible?
